the fastest growing occupations and which jobs will be the biggest in numbers in
the workforce. We can get this

The Fastest Growing Occupations
Personal care aides, registered nurses, retail salespersons, home health aides, food workers, nursing assistants, secretaries and administrative assistants, customer service representatives, janitors, and construction laborers.
If I were planning a career in my town or anywhere else, I would take these lists seriously, taking into consideration the pay, the demand and the educational requirements. Another way to gauge criteria is to simply look at a job board online. The job board that we use lists the top positions posted. These are sorted by quantity. You can look at the titles and the top companies that are hiring.
The Fastest Growing Occupations
- Industrial-organizational psychologists. These professionals help select and keep employees. This segment
is expected to grow by 53% to 2022. Despite the huge leap in jobs available,
this job title is in a very small niche.
- Personal care aides. The need
for PCA’s will grow by 49% as the aging population grows. This job, however,
pays little. Education requirements are high school or less. If you are looking for a night job, this might be a good fit.
- Insulation workers. This is an
on-the-job training position. Workers install insulation in buildings and
homes. Pay is ok. Job growth is at 38%.
- Interpreters and translators. This
is an excellent job opportunity as people come into the United States speaking
languages other than English. The pay is great and the hours can be flexible.
The education requirement is usually a Bachelor’s degree with a possible
certification. The interpreter or translator must know more than one language.
- Diagnostic medical sonographer. This
position is growing at 39% to 2022. The healthcare industry is one of the
largest employment segments. Sonographers operate imaging equipment. Pay is
averaged at $60,350 per year. Radiology imagers can work many shifts, including nights and overnights.
- Brick masons. As the construction
industry gets back on its feet, the need for stone workers grows. This is
another entry level job with training included.
- Occupational therapy assistants. These employees work under Occupational Therapists, and
provide therapy directly to patients. Education requirements are an Associate
degree and a state issued license.
- Genetic counselor. In this
job, the counselor assesses patients with birth defects and genetic disorders.
This job requires at least a Master’s degree. The occupation is growing by 41%.
The salary is approximately $56,000 per year.
- Physical therapy assistants.
These assistants work under Physical Therapists in hospitals and rehabilitation
centers. This opportunity grows at 41%. The pay is averaged at $52,160.
- Skin care specialist. These men
and women work in salons. They typically have a cosmetology certificate and
license. Our aging population wants to look younger and the need for these
specialists will grow. Pay is $13.77 per hour.
