The Graveyard Shift
The graveyard shift is a job that is worked between the hours of midnight and eight o'clock in the morning. Police officers, correction officers, nurses, doctors, truck drivers, machine operators, phone operators, call center associates, direct support caregivers, pilots, stewardesses, night auditors, mechanics and inventory stockers are a few of the job titles that typically have overnight hours.
This infographic from wheniwork.com really sums up the graveyard shift job. From it, you can see that one fifth of employees (approximately 15 million shift workers) in America work at night and 50 percent of these people work in protective service positions. Forty percent work in food and serving occupations.
We can also see that night shift workers get less sleep, and spend less time with their spouses than day shift workers. As we have talked about before, at Work at Night, there are health risks associated with the graveyard shift, such as fatigue, dissatisfaction in work/life balance and an increased tendency towards heart disease and breast cancer.
Positive aspects of working overnight are more time with kids, more time to soak up the sun during the day, and more time to run errands. Some people also report that they like to work in a quiet atmosphere. They also find working between the hours of midnight and 8 a.m. advantageous to managing family obligations.
