The Trans-Pacific Partnership is an agreement between 13 countries in Pacific and Asia to foster fair trade. Small companies in the U.S. will benefit from tariff relief, a supply chain among the member countries, protection of intellectual property,and an end to currency manipulation. All of this sounds good, but there are many people who are very concerned about the implications of the trade agreement. Nonetheless, Nike will bring thousands of jobs to the United States if this agreement is approved. If NIke is producing shoes and clothing here, there will be jobs in every aspect of running a huge business.

While there are news reports of factories laying off employees everyday, this article says that manufacturing jobs that had once been sent overseas, are now coming back to the United States. Perhaps the grass was not greener there. In addition to reshoring, there are daily reports of new warehouse facilities popping up and small job pools being created in many U.S. states. Although factory hiring fluctuates, there has been a turnaround in recent years. There are more job openings, however, some employers say that they cannot always find qualified job candidates.

This excellent article about a small factory town illustrates many things. Trade agreements and globalization are to blame for jobs leaving many cities. Some people survive the loss of jobs and get better jobs or pursue a higher education, while others just suffer financially. Nationally spread out benefits of globalization such as lower prices on goods, better selection of products, and new product markets replacing old ones do not seem to be enough to improve the lives of those who lost their livelihood.
