2nd Shift Jobs for Extra Income
Losing a job is not something that anyone would ever want. This is evidenced by the reality that any kind of job is either flooded with individuals whose academic degrees are not even related to the work that they are doing. There are also jobs that are very hard to do for the majority of people, but there are still individuals who take the opportunity of doing the work just for them to earn something. This is not only true for positions that require strength and other hardships, but also for jobs that require long working hours. Among these jobs are the 2nd shift jobs that you can have for extra income.
Types of Night Jobs
If there is anything prevalent about the labor market today, it is the availability of 2nd shift jobs. You can have the night jobs of your choice and all of your income can really add up to the sum that you need to earn. Keep in mind that it would be best if you can obtain a second shift job that is related to the day job that you are doing. One of the off hour jobs that are very much available nowadays are the customer service representatives or other jobs related to the business process outsourcing. You may be working behind the normal working hours, but the pay in the evening jobs are very lucrative. But if you think that you cannot do customer service related jobs, there are many other choices. For instance, you can mix and serve drinks, drive a truck, work at a delivery company as a packager, work in a restaurant, manage a hotel night desk, work at a seaport, count inventory, do cleaning work, work in jail, work as a nursing assistant, or do warehouse work. Some manufacturing companies are also offering 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. jobs, especially the ones that are operating 24 hours. These companies are offering different kinds of shift work titles including laborers, packagers, chemists and operating engineers.
Pros and Cons
There are advantages and disadvantages to working a second shift position. One advantage is that you can be home in the morning if you need to be with your family. If you are a college student, you can attend classes and study during the day. Another advantage is that you can work multiple jobs at once. Conversely, a huge disadvantage is not being home for family events. You will not see your kids all afternoon and at bedtime. Your day is interrupted at around 2 p.m. when you have to stop what you are doing and get ready for work. With a 2nd shift job, your morning and lunchtime will be crammed with all of the other chores and errands you need to do before work. However, being home in the daytime hours can work out well because you can go to the doctor, get your car inspected and take care of other necessities whereas, if you were at work, you would have to just wait for days off to accomplish these things.
The Job Search
The best way to find any kind of job, including ones for the afternoon shift is to ask friends and acquaintances to introduce you to a hiring manager. If you do not know anyone already working somewhere that you would like to work, then you will have to either apply online or in person. It would help if you could make a contact at a particular company ahead of time. You can do this by networking online through Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. Job fairs are also a great place to make contacts. Similarly, using a job agency can be ideal, because the agent will have personal contacts in the career marketplace.
Working for 2nd shift jobs is a regular occurrence nowadays. This is because aside from the fact that they pay a lot, they are also much easier to do as compared to the day time jobs that are available in the labor market. The only disadvantage in doing a 2nd shift job is that you cannot rest as a person with a day shift job would do. But you can earn a little more with a night shift pay differential. The more important thing about finding the night-time jobs is your satisfaction in doing the job. These positions can be found on our job board and at employer's websites.
